El presidente Alberto Fernández recorrió junto al ministro de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación, Daniel Filmus, y a la presidenta de la Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA), Adriana Serquis, las instalaciones del CAREM, el primer reactor nuclear de potencia íntegramente diseñado y construido en la Argentina, en la localidad bonaerense de Lima, partido de Zárate.
El CAREM es el primer reactor nuclear de baja potencia íntegramente diseñado y construido en la Argentina, y su construcción muestra la capacidad del país para el desarrollo y puesta en marcha de centrales nucleares.
Este desarrollo de la Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA) coloca a la Argentina en el camino de liderar el segmento de reactores modulares de baja y media potencia SMR, que son la tendencia mundial en materia de energía nuclear, porque se trata de reactores mucho más pequeños, con un diseño más simple y seguro.
Además, al construirse por módulos, son más convenientes a nivel económico porque es posible producirlos en serie, y porque permite que se sumen módulos en la medida que sea necesario incrementar la potencia de manera más flexible que una central grande, donde uno tiene que realizar toda la inversión al principio.
Esta clase de reactores tienen una gran proyección para el abastecimiento eléctrico de zonas alejadas de los grandes centros urbanos o de polos fabriles e industriales con alto consumo de energía (incluyendo la capacidad de alimentar plantas de desalinización de agua de mar).
Esta primera versión de los reactores tipo CAREM será capaz de generar 32 megavatios eléctricos, y se destaca por un riguroso estándar de seguridad aplicado desde el diseño, obtenido mediante soluciones de alta ingeniería que simplifican su construcción, operación y mantenimiento.
Se prevé que alrededor del 70% de sus insumos, componentes y servicios vinculados sea provisto por empresas argentinas certificadas bajo los exigentes estándares internacionales de calidad, supervisados por la CNEA.
En paralelo al desarrollo del prototipo, la CNEA avanza en el diseño conceptual del módulo comercial del CAREM, que tendrá una potencia mayor (de entre 100 y 120 MWe), y será la base de una central multi-reactor que permitirá alcanzar costos muy competitivos para el mercado internacional.
Previo a la recorrida, el presidente Alberto Fernández mantuvo una reunión de trabajo de la que también participaron el director de Energía Eléctrica de Salta, Jorge Giubergia; la responsable de Gestión Estratégica del Proyecto CAREM, Alejandra Calvo, y el gerente de Dirección de Obra, Juan Cattaneo.
